Hysterectomy: Is it Right for You?
by Janet Wright
Hysterectomy is one of the most commonly performed operations on women in the UK, affecting one in five women. It can be a life-saving operation for women with certain types of cancer or uterine haemorrhage, and can also improve quality of life for thousands of women each year with other conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding, fibroids, prolapse of the uterus, and endometriosis.
While just a few decades ago, a hysterectomy was the first choice for all kinds of conditions, women today are likely to be offered less invasive alternatives; indeed, in January 2007, NICE warned that many women were ‘suffering in silence’ from heavy periods because they were too scared to have a hysterectomy. So, is hysterectomy for you? This book looks at the options, from newer, minimally invasive operations, to ways to avoid hysterectomy altogether.
